Theoretical status of computational cognitive modeling

چکیده

This article explores the view that computational models of cognition may constitute valid theories of cognition, often in the full sense of the term ‘‘theory”. In this discussion, this article examines various (existent or possible) positions on this issue and argues in favor of the view above. It also connects this issue with a number of other relevant issues, such as the general relationship between theory and data, the validation of models, and the practical benefits of computational modeling. All the discussions point to the position that computational cognitive models can be true theories of cognition. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Naturalistic, Functional Approach to Modeling Language Comprehension

This paper describes a naturalistic approach to the development of a large-scale, functional, cognitively plausible model of language comprehension, and contrasts the approach with mainstream cognitive modeling and computational linguistic research. An approach to research is described which accepts the theoretical constraints of a cognitive architecture, while replacing the fine-grained empiri...

Structural model of the relationship between socioeconomic status and decision-making styles with the mediation of cognitive emotion regulation

Background and aims: Decision-making styles in adolescence are of particular importance and can be influenced by the cognitive regulation of emotion and socioeconomic status. The present study was conducted to investigate the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation in the relationship between socio-economic status and decision-making styles. Methods: This descriptive-correlational study...

Methodologies for the Computer Modeling of Human Cognitive Processes

Researchers interested in human cognitive processes have long used computer simulations to try to identify the principles of cognition. The strategy has been to build computational models that embody a set of principles and then the examine how well the models capture human performance in cognitive tasks. Computational modeling has both strengths and weaknesses in its usefulness in facilitating...

Computational Modeling of 2-sided Message’s Effects on Perceived Argument Strength

The aim of this research is studying of 2-sided message’s effects on persuasiveness of anti-drug messages by computational modeling method. It’s been done for getting more effective and more persuasive messages. Persuasiveness of messages is measured be perceived argument strength of them which is determined by audiences. In this research, according to formative researches, a method for measuri...

Study of pH influence on the stability of 175th codon of P53 genes by computational and modeling methods

P53 tumor suppressor gene, also known as “genome guardian” is mutated in more than half of allkind of cancers. In this study we have investigated the controls of environmental pH for P53 genemutation in point of specific sequence which is prone to mutagenesis. The most probable cancerousmutations occur as point mutations in exons 5-8 of P53 gene. The 175th codon of P53 is the thirdmost mutated ...
